Isaac Newton Institute of Mathematical Sciences

The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences is a national and international visitor research institute. It runs research programmes on selected themes in mathematics and the mathematical sciences with applications over a wide range of science and technology. It attracts leading mathematical scientists from the UK and overseas to interact in research over an extended period.

INI has a vital national role, building on many strengths that already exist in UK universities, aiming to generate a new vitality through stimulating and nurturing research throughout the country. During each scientific programme new collaborations are made and ideas and expertise are exchanged and catalysed through lectures, seminars and informal interaction, which the INI building has been designed specifically to encourage.

Newton Gateway to Mathematics

The Newton Gateway to Mathematics acts as a knowledge intermediary for the mathematical sciences. It is the impact initiative of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI). Supported by INI and the University of Cambridge, the Newton Gateway to Mathematics reaches out to and engages with the users of mathematics – in industry, business, public sector and other scientific disciplines. It helps to bridge the gap between those engaged in frontier mathematical research and those working in more applied areas, by stimulating the interchange of knowledge and ideas.

The Newton Gateway works as a delivery partner to facilitate the exchange, translation and dissemination of knowledge. Using effective communications and proven methodologies, it develops and runs activities such as workshops and meetings, bringing people and organisations together in order to share knowledge and stimulate further research and collaboration. With extensive access to multiple communities across the UK and globally, it can respond in an agile and flexible manner.

International Centre for Mathematical Sciences

International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) stimulates and promotes the mathematical sciences through diverse international workshops & conferences. Our vibrant events programme attracts leading mathematical scientists from the UK and internationally – connecting mathematical communities across the world. As a response to COVID, we are now experienced in organising and hosting virtual events, alongside in-person ones.

In addition to workshops, ICMS manages a number of other mathematical activities, such as our very popular Research-in-Groups programme; an extensive knowledge exchange programme; public engagement; and by giving administrative support to a number of mathematical groups.

The Council for the Mathematical Sciences

The Council for the Mathematical Sciences (CMS) was established in 2001 by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS). The CMS comprises representatives and observers from the mathematical sciences community, including the Presidents and Chief Executives of these three societies.

The CMS provides an authoritative and objective body that exists to develop, influence and respond to UK policy issues that affect the mathematical sciences in higher education and research, and therefore the UK economy and society in general.

The Academy for the Mathematical Sciences

The Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (AcadMathSci) will be an authoritative and persuasive voice for the whole of the mathematical sciences. We will work together to develop, communicate, teach and use the power of the mathematical sciences to benefit our world. This includes teaching and education, academic research pushing the frontiers of what is known, and the implementation of the mathematical sciences in practice.

The Academy will be dedicated to supporting the advancement of the field ensuring that it delivers on its potential to enrich our world, by nurturing the people pipeline, and increasing societal engagement and recognition of the value, and indeed beauty, of mathematics. We know that the mathematical sciences improve lives, help people, help society, and improve the economy and productivity.

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the main funding body for engineering and physical sciences research in the UK. Our diverse portfolio ranges from digital technologies to clean energy, manufacturing to mathematics, advanced materials to chemistry.

The Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in Mathematical Sciences

The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), Isaac Newton Institute (INI), Newton Gateway to Mathematics and Innovate UK KTN have worked with various representatives from the mathematical sciences community to develop a Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences (V-KEMS).

The main aim of V-KEMS is to identify a range of virtual approaches that will help address challenges from business and industry, the third sector, and other groups outside academia. These challenges may be long-standing or may have arisen directly as a consequence of the present disruption to UK society.

The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry

The European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) is a consortium of academic institutions and industrial companies that acts co-operatively with the following aims:

  • To promote and support the use of mathematical modelling, simulation, and optimization in any activity of social or economic importance.
  • To educate Industrial Mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts.
  • To operate on a European scale.
