Alan Champneys has been in the Department of Engineering Mathematics at the University of Bristol for 30 years, having been Head of Department twice, and helped launch interdisciplinary initiatives in the life sciences and global change. He is known for research in applied dynamical systems, having been a past chair of the corresponding SIAM Activity Group.
He collaborates widely with engineers, life scientists, and industry. He was twice a member of the EPSRC Strategic Advisory Team, under which guise he instigated the Bond Review of Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences. He chairs the Newton Gateway Strategic Advisory Board and was also a founder of the Virtual Forum for Knowledge in the Mathematical Sciences (V-KEMS) which won Praxis KE Team of the Year 2021. He is active in popularisation of mathematics, for example through the “Westward Ho!” features in the IMA’s publication Mathematics Today.
